It’s basically an informal chat about scientific issues, between researchers, experts and scientists with the general population. It happens annually in restaurants and bars of several Brazilian cities, this year in 87 cities of Brazil.

The objective is to bring science closer to the local public, discussing in an open, accessible and informal ways, subjects from the most varied areas of human knowledge.

The idea came in 2012, by two researchers from Imperial College London, Michael Motskin and Praveen Paul who organized an event called Meeting with Researchers. At this meeting, several people with Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, neuromuscular diseases and multiple sclerosis were invited to meet the scientists’ labs and see closely and in practice the type of research they performed. The experience was so inspiring that the duo Michael Motskin and Praveen Paul decided to propose an event where researchers could leave the laboratories of universities and research institutes to talk directly with people, so in May 2013, the first Pint of Science.

The initiative has spread rapidly around the world and today there are 24 countries participating in the festival.

This year’s edition will take place on May 20, 21 and 22, 2019 in the evening, and it is free, with no need for previous registrations by the interested parties, however the vacancies are limited according to the capacity of each participating bar / restaurant. On-site expenses are the responsibility of the persons concerned.

Pint of Science in Campinas/São Paulo

The Pint of Science festival in Campinas is coordinated by Prof. Dr. Luiz Carlos Dias, from the Chemistry Institute of UNICAMP and his team.

There will be almost 30 speakers, who will talk about topics such as science and public policy, forensic science, preservation of indigenous languages, universe, evolution, foresight and more. The performances begin at 7:30 p.m.

The event will have the participation of Kurt Wüthrich, honored with Nobel Prize 2002 in Chemistry for its work on structural macro-molecule determination in solution making use of nuclear magnetic resonance (RMN). In the occasion also Platform II of RMN of the IQ, will be installed with support of “Programa Equipamentos Multiusuários” (EMU) of the FAPESP – São Paulo Research Foundation.

For the platform three spectrometers had been acquired: one of 600 MHz with system cryo-probe; one of 400 MHz, for solids – one of the most modern instruments of Latin America in the modality; and one of 300 MHz to be operated by students and also for students to be trained in the technique of organic analysis.

The new acquisitions join to the others two spectrometers of the Platform of RMN I, beyond probes and accessories. Diverse spectroscopic techniques are applied in samples in the states liquid and solid to take care of to the demand generated for the groups of research of the IQ and for other institutions of the Unesp and other institutes of research and universities.

Beyond the support to education and the research, the RMN platforms offer external services, in interaction with industries of the State of São Paulo and other regions of the country.

The symposium will be carried through in the building of the IQ, located in the Rua Francisco Degni, 55, Quitandinha, in Araraquara, São Paulo.

Resistance of the Plasmodium falciparum and Plasmodium vivax Monitoring to Antimalarials in Rondônia and search for new schizontocidal blood and tissue for control and treatment of disease.

Chloroquine (CQ), a cost effective antimalarial drug with a relatively good safety profile and therapeutic index, is no longer used by itself to treat patients with Plasmodium falciparum due to CQ-resistant strains. P. vivax, representing over 90% of malaria cases in Brazil, despite reported resistance, is treated with CQ as well as with primaquine to block malaria transmission and avoid late P. vivax malaria relapses. Resistance to CQ and other antimalarial drugs influences malaria control, thus monitoring resistance phenotype by parasite genotyping is helpful in endemic areas.

Developing Specialized Phytochemical Factories as Future Sources of Biofuels, Petrochemical Substitutes, Specialty Chemicals, and Medicinals

Plants and microorganisms, due to fast evolution of synthetic biology, are each time more explored as half to produce medicinal biofuels, that substitute the petrochemical ones, and agents sustainable. However, the ways responsible biochemists for the synthesis of such natural products well are frequent not known.

Technologies as the spectrometry of mobility of ions, as well as the microdissection the vegetal fabric laser, beyond the some “omics” methods, supply ways to investigate these processes. These methodologies in allow them to establish and to explore the genes involved, proteins, metabólitos, transport mechanisms, as well as the compartmentalization strategies.

On the basis of such advances, the team of the professor Norman G. Lewis, of Washington State University, is developing new sustainable biological platforms in plants, for production of drugs and other chemical products, as  for example, the antitumoral, podofilotoxina agent.
