Pint of Science Festival 2018

What is the Pint of Science?

Basically it is an open and informal short chat about scientific topics, which happens annually in several bars and restaurants of more than 50 Brazilian cities. Professors and researchers from various scientific fields talk to the general public and answer questions that influence people’s daily lives.

The idea is to bring researchers and experts from the most varied areas of human knowledge to the local population in order to discuss in an accessible and fun-filled manner those topics that are relevant to everyone, for example: drug development, neglected diseases, astronomy, intelligence artificial, brain functioning, creative economy, food and health, fake news, greenhouse effect, etc.

How did the Pint of Science come about?

In 2012, two researchers from Imperial College London, Michael Motskin and Praveen Paul, organized an event called Researchers Meeting. At that meeting, several people with Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s disease, neuromuscular diseases and multiple sclerosis were invited to get to know the laboratories of the scientists and to see closely and in practice the type of research they performed. The experience was so inspiring that the duo Michael Motskin and Praveen Paul decided to propose an event where researchers could leave the laboratories of universities and research institutes to talk directly with people, so in May 2013, occur the first Pint of Science.

The event then spread rapidly around the world and in 2018 reached 21 countries – and the goal is to expand it more and more. “I want to take the Pint of Science to every city in the world and communicate science as it is: fun, fascinating and inspiring,” says Motskin.

How did the Pint of Science festival come to Brazil?

The Pint of Science was brought to Brazil by journalist Denise Casatti, from the Institute of Mathematical and Computer Sciences – ICMC of USP of São Carlos, and it happened for the first time in the country in 2015.

The festival was so successful that many people were interested in taking the event to their cities and in 2016, Belo Horizonte, Campinas, Dourados, Ribeirão Preto, Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo also had talks with scientists.

Conversations in bars and restaurants continued to spill over and in 2017 the number of participating municipalities rose to 22: Araraquara, Belo Horizonte, Botucatu, Blumenau, Brasília, Campinas, Curitiba, Dourados, Florianópolis, Goiânia, Natal, Piracicaba, Porto Alegre, Ribeirão Preto, Rio de Janeiro, Salvador, Santos, São Caetano do Sul, São Carlos, São Paulo, Sorocaba and Teresina made toasts to science with a menu for all tastes.

This year in 2018, the total number of cities increased, with representatives from all regions of the country, and more topics will be addressed. What does not change is that the festival’s coordinators and scientists do not receive remuneration – the idea is to share and discuss knowledge on a voluntary basis – and the bars and restaurants that give away their space do not charge entrance fees. The public only pays for what they consume.

When will this year’s Pint of Science festival be?

This year’s Pint of Science will be held on May 14, 15 and 16 at 7:30 p.m., and for the first time will be held in bars and restaurants in all regions of the country.

Pint Of Science is a free event, without the need for previous registrations by interested parties. Vacancies are limited, according to the capacity of each participating bar.

On-site expenses are the responsibility of the participants.
