Regulatory Framework for Brazilian Biodiversity

Start:  02 Dec 2016 – End: 02 Dec 2016

By the FAPESP Agency – A year and a half after the new Biodiversity Law was sanctioned, the Federal University of São Carlos (UFSCar) promotes, on December 2, 2016, the workshop “Regulatory Framework for Brazilian Biodiversity”, to analyze impacts and academic and industrial experiences to date and challenges.

“Many researchers and people interested in the subject are not yet aware of the changes the law promotes. Therefore, the objective of the event is to clarify to all who work with biodiversity the correct way to adapt to avoid problems in the future. This is an opportunity to clear questions about licenses and procedures”, said Professor Quezia Cass, a professor in the Department of Chemistry and coordinator of Technology Transfer at the Center of Excellence for Research in Sustainable Chemistry at UFSCar.

The Biodiversity Law, implemented to regulate access to genetic patrimony, to  traditional knowledge associated and to sharing of benefits obtained from biodiversity, aims to stimulate research and technological development in Brazil.

Among the main points of the new Biodiversity Framework are the withdrawal of penalties imposed on companies that have violated rules related to the exploitation of plants or animals and the creation of norms of payment by companies to the government and traditional peoples, such as indigenous and quilombolas, by the use of natural genetic resources when their knowledge is considered as the main element of aggregation of value to the product.

The workshop will approach perspectives and impacts of the Biodiversity Law and its academic and industrial experiences. Thiago Araújo, environmental analyst at the Ministry of the Environment, Mônica Pupo, professor at the School of Pharmaceutical Sciences of Ribeirão Preto at USP, and Luiz Ricardo Marinello, from LFM Advogados, will be the speakers.

The advances and challenges of biodiversity at UFSCar will be addressed by Professor Heloisa Araújo, from the Department of Physiological Sciences.

The event will take place from 2.30 pm in auditorium 1 of the Community Library, located in the north area of the São Carlos campus of UFSCar.

The workshop is open to all interested parties. Registrations are free and can be made until November 30th by e-mail cersuschem@ufscar.br
