Vanderlan Bolzani appointed to the Fapesp Conselho Superior

Vanderlan Bolzani,  professor at the Institute of Chemistry of UNESP in Araraquara, was appointed by the State Governor, Geraldo Alckmin, to join the Superior Council of FAPESP (Conselho Superior). She will complement the mandate of Professor Julio Cezar Durigan, until 17/August/2022, due to his death in last September.

There were also the appointment of José Goldemberg, Marco Antonio Zago and Ignacio Maria Proveda Velasco, nominated by USP. Vanderlan was indicated by the other Institutes of Higher Education and Research, official or private in operation in the State of São Paulo.

Carlos Frederico de Oliveira Graeff, Pro-Rector of Research at Unesp, highlights the importance of the appointment to the Superior Council of Fapesp. “It is the highest body of the entity, responsible for establishing important directions on funding policies and on the future of the Foundation as a whole”,  he says.

“The fact that Professor Vanderlan ranked first in the triple list was already a recognition by voters of her importance as a nationally and internationally renowned researcher and active in the discussions surrounding science policy in the country. University maintain its number of participants in the Superior Council, since the open vacancy is the one that belonged to Professor Durigan, ” he concludes.

“I am grateful for the appointment and the confidence placed in the expressive vote that I had in the election to the Superior Council of FAPESP, published last December, ranking 1st in the triple list. I will always be attentive to the interests of science, technology and innovation, which are the sustaining pillars of any nation that seeks  for economic and social sovereignty. Our Unesp is a great university and over the almost 40 years that I am here I am trying to work very hard as a professor and scientist,  aiming to contribute with an Institution that gave me all institutional support to carry out work that is true passion. About Professor Vanderlan Bolzani

Professor at the Institute of Chemistry of Unesp and member of the Paulista Academy of Science and the Brazilian Academy of Sciences, Vanderlan Bolzani is a Pharmacist graduated from the Faculty of Pharmacy of the Federal University of Paraíba, master in organic chemistry by the Institute of Chemistry of the University of São Paulo (IQ-USP) and a Ph.D. in sciences, also from IQ-USP, in 1982. She headed the Unesp Chemistry Department for two consecutive terms. She was a member of the Unesp University Council and Postgraduate Council, held the positions of vice president and president of the Brazilian Society of Chemistry (SBQ) and was advisor to the University’s Pro-Rectory of Research. In 2009 she was elected Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry (UK). She is a member of the coordination of the BIOTA-FAPESP / BIOprospectaTA program.

Triple List

Professor Vanderlan was the most voted in triple list, which included Helena Bonciani Nader of the Federal University of São Paulo (Unifesp) and Ronaldo Aloise Pilli of the State University of Campinas (Unicamp).

Vanderlan Bolzani had 507 votes; Helena Nader, 478 votes; and Ronaldo Pilli, 216 votes. 989 valid votes were received, 1 blank and 2 null, with a 92.2% participation of the electoral college.

The list was sent to the governor of the State, Geraldo Alckmin, for the election of the new councillor, under the terms of art. 7, paragraph 3, of State Law No. 5.918, dated 10/18/1960, combined with art. 9, item “c”, of the Statutes of FAPESP, approved by Decree nº 40.132, of 05/23/1962.

The Election

The higher education and research institutions, official or private, operating in the State of São Paulo enrolled 14 candidates.

The election was held in the period from December 11 to 15, 2017, through the Internet, closing at 5 pm on the last day. At the end of the voting, the results of the Electoral Commission were immediately verified at FAPESP headquarters.

The board members were: Eduardo Moacyr Krieger (president), José de Souza Martins and Marilza Vieira Cunha Rudge. The president of FAPESP, José Goldemberg, also participated in the closing of the election.
